50 Years of Enchantment

Built just off the highway in Turner, Ore.—a near-perfect halfway point between Portland and Eugene—an inviting pink castle and a 100-foot ice mountain are just a few of the attractions hidden from passing motorists on Interstate-5. But beneath the canopy of trees that seems to encompass most of this region, the green gates and ticket booths that would typically give way to life-size storybook villages, well-known fairytale characters, and curated outdoor scenes complete with handcrafted animatronics have long been tarped over and shuttered. On-Campus COVID Crisis

It’s noon on the Monday of week eight and the University of Oregon campus is silent. Brightly colored leaves litter the sidewalks, floating effortlessly over empty bike racks, neglected benches, and long-shuttered building entryways. Lax Logging Laws Lessen Quality of Life in Rural Oregon
Journalism • Photography • Environment
In a rural woodland about 30 minutes outside of Eugene, Oregon, intermittent sunlight filters through the high branches of conifers, bathing the earth below in soft sunspots. Hairy, green moss clings to this sparse smattering of thin trees, each of similar species and stretching about 50 feet into the sky. They dance in the slight breeze, their disturbed leaves and branches the only sound in a quiet wilderness just off the road. Occasional sticks and vines traverse the otherwise fairly navigable floor. While this may sound like a well-maintained and thriving forest, looks can be deceiving. Read More

Branching out: The Story of Michael Garnier's Treehouses

Creaking, swinging rope bridges, spiral staircases, rolling pastures and cabins many feet above the ground are not the features of your typical vacation getaway, but they are what draws travelers to Out ‘n’ About Treehouse Treesort. The 37-acre property is located 11 miles south of Cave Junction, Oregon, not far from the California border. Rather than a high-rise hotel or sprawling campground, 12 treehouses sit high above the ground in the canopy of the trees. Each treehouse is fully furnished, and the main lodge sits at ground-level with free breakfast every morning and plenty of activities, like horseback riding and ziplining, to choose from each day.
